Vol. 389 No. 4

Written Answers. - Lomé Convention.

70.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the countries which were represented at official level only at the Brazzaville talks on Lomé IV, as referred to in his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 50 of 19 April 1989; if there are likely to be only two more ministerial level meetings; and if he will ensure that Ireland will be represented at this level.

The other countries represented at Brazzaville at official level were the Federal Republic of Germany and Luxembourg. I might add that the Danish delegation was headed by a Secretary of State in the Foreign Ministry who in Denmark is a civil servant comparable in our civil service with the grade of Deputy Secretary.

The negotiations are scheduled to be concluded by the end of this year. This timetable would require at least two ministerial level meetings. It is my intention that Ireland will be represented at ministerial level at future EC/ACP ministerial meetings in these negotiations.
