Vol. 391 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Cavan Bridge.

19.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if there have been any recent developments in relation to the reopening of Aghalane Bridge at Belturbet, County Cavan; if the matter has been raised with the British Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Aghalane Bridge was destroyed by terrorist action in 1972 and a subsequent replacement bridge was also destroyed by terrorist action. In recent years the British authorities have maintained the view that the bridge cannot be reopened for security reasons.

I am aware of the security situation but I am also very conscious of the effect of the closure of Aghalane Bridge on the inhabitants of Belturbet and the surrounding area. The closure cuts Belturbet off from its natural hinterland in County Fermanagh and is a considerable inconvenience to the people of the area.

The Deputy will appreciate that the co-operation of the British authorities is necessary if the bridge is to be reopened. The question of reopening has been raised with them on a number of occasions. I will continue to ensure that they are kept aware of our view on this matter. For their part, the British authorities have assured us that all road closures are kept under review.
