Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Collon (Louth) Traffic Problem.

266.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the serious traffic problem which exists at the village of Collon in County Louth, with particular reference to the national primary route in the village centre; if he has any plans to give sanction for the provision of traffic lights to Louth County Council; the amount of moneys which he is allocating for the purpose of completion of this important work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the position in regard to traffic on the national primary road at Collon village. Proposals for remedial works, involving the provision of public lighting and the improvement of the national primary road-Drogheda Road junction, have been received in my Department from Louth County Council. On 30 August 1989 the Department requested the local authority to proceed with the preparation of detailed design for a composite public lighting and junction improvement scheme along the lines proposed by them. It is considered that the provision of traffic lights at this location would not be appropriate.

The provision of a grant for the scheme will be considered when the road grant allocations for 1990 are being determined.
