Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Allowance for Couple.

77.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason a couple living together are only allowed a single person's tax allowance when the Department of Social Welfare assess such couples on a par with married couples for means testing for social welfare benefits; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware, there are no special tax allowances for unmarried couples living together as man and wife. This tax treatment reflects the general law relating to marriage.
