Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Great Southern Hotels Employment.

142.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons employed in each of the Great Southern Hotels; the profit or loss situation in respect of the running of each of the hotels for the years (a) 1986, (b) 1987 and (c) 1988.

The number of people employed in each of the six Great Southern Hotels, as of 11 August 1989, was as follows:

Killarney

118

Galway

95

Corrib

70

Rosslare

70

Parknasilla

64

Torc

55

Total

472

These figures, however, include both regular seasonal workers and casual workers employed in high season. The total number of permanent staff employed by Great Southern Hotels is approximately 180.

As regards the profits or loss situation, the GSH Group's accounts are compiled on a consolidated basis and do not give details in relation to individual hotels. In any event, there are sound commercial reasons which I am sure the Deputy will appreciate for not releasing financial information on individual hotels.

Over the past few years, the profit and loss accounts for the GSH Group have shown a steady improvement in performance and profitability with net profits as follows: 1986 £563,410; 1987 £687,425; 1988 £731,960.

The group expect to maintain this trend with a further significant increase in profits for 1989.
