Vol. 393 No. 2

Written Answers. - Manufacture of Gloves.

77.

asked the Minister for Finance where the gloves worn by the members of the Defence Forces are manufactured; and if they are manufactured outside the State or within the State.

The purchase of gloves for Government services, including the Defence Forces, is the responsibility of the Government Supplies Agency, Office of Public Works. The gloves purchased by the agency on behalf of the Defence Forces in the past year were manufactured within the State, in England and West Germany. The value of the gloves purchased is as follows:

Country of Manufacture

Approximate Value

£

Ireland

4,850

England

880

West Germany

70

Total

5,800

I should add that contracts are placed by the agency on the basis of competitive tendering, in accordance with Government contracts procedures. Because of this country's membership of the European Community, a Government Department may not insist that all, or any, of the work involved in meeting its supply orders be carried out in the State.
