A draft EC Directive, which is currently being finalised, provides for the phased withdrawal of those imperial units which are still legal.
Under the first phase all imperial units for general use, with the exceptions mentioned below, must be withdrawn not later than 31 December 1994. The second phase sets 31 December 1999 as the latest date by which units used in the following areas of activity must be withdrawn.
