Vol. 393 No. 4

Written Answers. - Temporary Teacher Appointment.

175.

asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint an additional temporary teacher at The Good Shepherd national school, Churchtown, Dublin 14 due to the special and serious difficulties attached to the organisation, setting up and administration of this new school as a result of the recent amalgamation.

The staffing of national schools is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with the agreement reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. The combined enrolment of Loreto Girls' national school and De La Salle Boys' national school on 30 September 1988 was 258 pupils which, following their amalgamation warrants a staff of Principal plus seven assistants in The Good Shepherd national school for the 1989-90 school year. The school also has the services of a full time remedial teacher. The authorised teaching staff for the current year is in the school at present.

The only exception that can be made from the agreed staffing arrangements is in the case of developing schools or where my Department's guidelines on maximum class sizes would be breached. The Good Shepherd national school does not meet the required criteria for either exception, therefore the appointment of a temporary teacher in the school is not warranted.
