Vol. 393 No. 4

Written Answers. - Swansea-Cork Ferry.

210.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport his views on whether the provision of the Swansea-Cork ferry is an essential ingredient for a successful tourism industry in the south-west.

It is difficult to quantify the level of contribution which the Swansea-Cork ferry service has made to tourism in the south-west region. I firmly believe, however, that only a commercially viable service can be of lasting benefit to that region. In that regard, the Government's commitment of financial assistance for the ferry service in 1990 is in recognition of the contribution to the region which a viable service could make and the strong convictions expressed by local interests in the Cork and Kerry areas that such a service could become viable.
