Vol. 393 No. 4

Written Answers. - Smoke Free Zone.

132.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received representations (details supplied) to have Quarryvale, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, designated by order as a smoke free zone; the steps that have been taken in this regard to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I received representations from Quarryvale Residents Association on 1 November 1989.

Quarryvale is within the area to which the Special Control Area (Clondalkin) No. 1 Order, 1988, made by Dublin County Council relates. Objections have been made to the making of this order. In accordance with the requirements of section 41 of the Air Pollution Act, 1987, an oral hearing must be held in relation to the order before I can consider its confirmation or otherwise.

Most households in the area covered by this special control area order are not connected to the gas grid and could not, as things stand, avail of the full range of heating conversion options normally available. The feasibility of extending gas mains in Dublin is being considered at present and the position as regards an oral hearing in relation to the order will be kept under review in the light of developments.
