Vol. 393 No. 6

Written Answers. - Support for Eastern Europe.

34.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if during the Irish Presidency of the EC, he will invite leaders of the Eastern bloc countries, now adopting democracy, to visit this country to show our support for the new system in their countries; and, if so, if he will issue the first invitation to Lech Walesa of Poland.

I warmly welcome developments which are leading a number of countries in Eastern Europe towards becoming fully pluralist and democratic societies. It is my intention, particularly during Ireland's Presidency of the European Communities, to maintain close contact with these countries.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Hungary will pay an official visit to Ireland on 6 December and the Minister for Foreign Affairs intends to visit Poland in the near future. Other visits are also possible but are not planned at this stage.

It is possible that Lech Walesa will also visit Ireland. Should he decide to do so, the Minister for Foreign Affairs will be happy to meet him.
