Vol. 393 No. 8

Written Answers. - Beaumont Hospitals Paediatric Neuro-Surgeon.

162.

asked the Minister for Health the reason it is necessary to employ the services of a paediatric neuro-surgeon from Glasgow when an Irish paediatric neuro-surgeon has equal surgical expertise, for the proposed new surgery team in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9, as per a report (details supplied).

Beaumont Hospital Board have not made any arrangements to avail of the services of a paediatric neuro-surgeon from abroad for a proposed new surgery team.

One of the consultant neuro-surgeons at the hospital is exploring the possibility of developing a service to deal with certain very specialised conditions for which surgery has never been available in this country and for which four children were referred abroad in 1988. The Deputy should be aware that there has never been a combined cranio-facial team in this country and that the present situation does not arise from changes in consultant personnel in the neuro-surgical department of Beaumont Hospital.
