Vol. 393 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Genealogical Centres.

2.

asked the Taoiseach when he expects the detailed proposals for the development of a network of genealogical centres being prepared by a task force to be presented to him.

As I indicated to the Deputy on 7 November 1989, detailed proposals on the development of a network of genealogical centres are being prepared by the Task Force on Roots, Genealogy and Tourism. This is a project which requires consultation with many groups and organisations both in the private and public sectors. This is taking place and I understand the task force will make recommendations in the early months of 1990.

I compliment the Taoiseach on this initiative. Would he agree that this is a matter of some urgency in view of the fact that there are a number of voluntary centres existing on a hand-to-mouth basis, including one in Trim which is mentioned in a later question? Will the Taoiseach ask the task force to complete their deliberations as quickly as possible with a view to a decision being taken before some of these centres go out of existence?

Yes, I will be glad to do that.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the ecclesiastical authorities in one diocese are unwilling to make their records available because of possible discrepancies which might be shown up in some family trees? Would he have a word with the bishop?

I am not so aware.
