Vol. 393 No. 8

Written Answers. - Britain and EMS.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is prepared to raise, at the Anglo-Irish Council or elsewhere, the negative implications for Ireland of the continued British failure to join the European Monetary System exchange rate mechanism.

The fact that sterling does not participate in the exchange rate mechanism of the European Monetary System is a matter of concern for the European Community as a whole. As such, it is a matter best dealt with within the appropriate Community fora. The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that the British authorities are committed, in principle, to putting sterling into the ERM and we would wish they would do so at an early date.

The Deputy may be assured that I have raised our particular concerns frequently in Community and bilateral discussions in the past and will continue to do so in the future.
