Vol. 393 No. 9

Written Answers. - Lobster Fishermen.

38.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the recent incidents off the Porturlin, Ballyglass coastal areas of North Mayo where a substantial number of lobster pots have been lost to local fishermen by trawlers alleged to be operating from a more northerly port; the action he proposes to take to protect the livelihood of the lobster fishermen concerned; whether he will make compensation available to the fishermen concerned; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has received verbal reports from a number of fishermen based in Mayo in recent months concerning alleged damage to lobster pots by larger fishing vessels and my protection staff have been asked to investigate the matter. However, I must point out that the matter is primarily a civil law issue between the parties concerned and the question of compensation from the Exchequer does not arise.
