Vol. 393 No. 9

Written Answers. - Vermin Attack on Forestry Plantations.

63.

asked the Minister for Energy if he has examined a report (details supplied) regarding the attack of vermin on young forestry plantations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The bank vole was first discovered in Ireland in Kerry in 1964. Since then it has spread over the neighbouring counties of Cork and Limerick and perhaps further afield.

There have been a small number of reports of damage to young plantations, and while its local impact can be severe, there have been no reports of widespread or extensive damage.

The situation is at present being assessed and control measures are being considered.
