Vol. 393 No. 10

Written Answers. - Marriages Registration: Islamic Community.

89.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there are over 5,000 Muslims in Ireland; that their mosque and religious leaders, including the Imam, are not recognised by his Department as official registrars of civil marriages; if he will take the necessary steps to provide for such official facilities involving the registration of marriages to be extended to the Islamic community; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The present position is that Islamic marriages performed in a mosque do not satisfy the requirements of the existing marriage laws to this State. However, the question of the formalities of marriage is being considered in the context of a review of the marriage registration laws and associated matters which is being undertaken by my Department.
