Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - Liquid Petroleum Gas.

136.

asked the Minister for Energy if his attention has been drawn to the positive environmental effects of liquid petroleum gas as a source of vehicular fuel; the steps he has taken in conjunction with the oil companies and the motor trade to encourage the use of vehicles which are capable of operating on liquid petroleum gas to be increased; the number of retail outlets where it can be purchased; and if he will made a statement on the matter.

Irish energy policy is based on exploiting secure, economic and diverse energy sources. The diversification of fuel requirements in all sectors, including the transport sector, is of great importance and in this light I consider LPG has a role to play in the Irish scene. The scale of future LPG activity as a motor fuel depends on the industry's ability to win customers on the basis of the relative attractiveness of its product. It is only on this basis that LPG can continue to be a viable fuel for the transport sector.

I am aware of the environmental benefits of LPG as a motor fuel and successive Ministers for Energy have highlighted these factors and supported the LPG's industry's own similar view, at seminars organised by the industry. I will have the promotion of gas powered vehicles, from the viewpoint of improved environmental impact, brought to the attention of the Minister for the Environment. LPG for vehicles can be purchased at approximately 600 outlets throughout the country.
