Dáil Éireann díospóireacht -
Tuesday, 5 Dec 1989

Vol. 394 No. 1

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

I request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to raise a matter of specific and important public concerned and interest which I believe requires urgent attention. The motion I wish the House to deal with today reads as follows:

That Dáil Éireann deplores the Government's failure to take any meaningful action to tackle the smog problem in Dublin and calls on the Minister for the Environment to this day bring forward for enactment the amending legislation necessary to render effective the Air Pollution Act, 1987, in tackling smog in Dublin and to immediately make available conversion grants to all those parts of Dublin that have suffered smog above EC limits during the past ten days.

Having considered the Deputy's submission very carefully and fully, I do not consider that it is one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and I cannot, therefore, grant leave to move the motion. Riar na hOibre.

On a point of order, before the Taoiseach moves the Order of Business, could I invite him in a spirit of co-operation with all sides of this House to amend the Order of Business for today——

I have ruled on the matter.

——so that we can deal with the necessary amending legislation required.

Deputy Shatter may not hold up any further the Business of this House in such an unruly fashion.

(Interruptions.)

Deputy Shatter will now resume his seat. The Taoiseach on the Order of Business.

They are smug about smog.
