The EC is currently considering proposals for two Council Directives for completion of the internal market in the area of nutritional labelling of foodstuffs. These cover the following two areas:
(1) on the introduction of compulsory nutrition labelling of foodstuffs intended for sale to the ultimate consumer;
(2) on nutrition labelling rules for foodstuffs intended for sale to the ultimate consumers.
Ireland is participating in the discussions at EC level which are currently at an advanced stage. As soon as the proposals are finalised and the necessary directives adopted, I will be implementing their provisions in this country.
