asked the Minister for Education the average pupil-teacher ratio in 1988-89 for the following categories of schools: (a) secondary schools, (b) vocational schools and (c) community-comprehensive schools; and the basis on which such a calculation is made.
Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.
213.
The average pupil/teacher ratio in 1988-89 for the categories of schools referred to by the Deputy is given below:
(a) Secondary schools |
19.4 : 1 |
(b) Vocational schools |
17.8 : 1 |
(c) Community and comprehensive schools |
18.1 : 1 |
The basis on which this calculation is made is the actual number of pupils in full-time day courses, including the vocational preparation and training programme, divided by the total number of wholetime teacher equivalents, excluding ex-quota teachers, in each sector.
These figures reflect the lower pupil-teacher ratio of 16:1 applicable in the case of vocational preparation and training courses, of which the greater proportion are held in vocational schools.
