Vol. 394 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Visit to Northern Ireland.

5.

asked the Taoiseach if he proposes to visit Northern Ireland, as was done on previous occasions by his predecessors; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware, I visited Derry recently on the occasion of the inauguration of the Aer Lingus air service with Dublin.

Public engagements of this nature are announced at the appropriate time, having regard to security and other considerations.

While I fully recognise the protocol and security implications attached to the Taoiseach's reply, could he give an indication to the House that we might be pleasantly surprised — in the way that his father-in-law surprised the nation — by a visit to Northern Ireland some time in the near future?

The Deputy should keep his fingers crossed.

I do, all the time.

When did the Taoiseach last visit Northern Ireland to meet politicians?

I met politicians when I was in Derry in April.

Did the Taoiseach meet politicians of different persuasions?

My meeting politicians in the North would be much more productive than the Deputy doing so.

Will the Taoiseach answer the question?

This is leading to unnecessary argument.

Will the Taoiseach answer the question?

I have answered the question.
