Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - Toys Advertisement Control.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the severe pressure which can be placed on low income families as a result of the advertising of toys, especially in the Christmas period, he will consider introducing regulations to control or restrict such advertising, particularly those on television; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will be aware that our current legislative controls in relation to advertising are contained in the Consumer Information Act, 1978 and in regulations which gave effect to the EC Directive on misleading advertising. In general terms, these prohibit advertising which is false or misleading. I do not have the statutory power to introduce regulations of the type suggested by the Deputy.
