Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - UN Peace-Keeping Operations Costs.

68.

asked the Minister for Defence the amount of money due to this country at present by the United Nations in respect of peace-keeping service completed by Irish troops which is still outstanding; the length of time this has been outstanding; and the total amount in respect of the various years.

As at 31 October 1989 a total shortfall of about £18.9 million in reimbursable entitlements from the United Nations had accumulated in respect of participation by personnel of the Defence Forces in peace-keeping operations in Lebanon and Cyprus. Of this amount £18.2 million relates to involvement in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since May 1978. The remaining shortfall of £0.7 million arises out of participation in the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) which commenced in April 1964.

The cumulative total outstanding in respect of UNIFIL on 31 December 1984 amounted to £14.372 million. The amounts outstanding on 31 December in each of the following years are as follows: 1985, £15.919 million; 1986, £16.915 million; 1987, £18.893 million; 1988, £14.465 million. The question of securing payment of the amounts outstanding is pursued on a continuous basis with the United Nations using all appropriate means for the purpose.
