Vol. 394 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Grants.

116.

asked the Minister for Education the total funds made available by her Department in running costs, excluding teacher salaries, in the following categories of schools in the years (a) 1987, (b) 1988 and (c) 1989 for (i) fee paying secondary schools, (ii) fee paying Protestant schools, (iii) other secondary schools, (iv) vocational schools and community colleges, (v) community schools and (vi) comprehensive schools.

Grants other than teachers' salaries have not been paid to fee charging secondary schools with effect from the commencement of the 1986-87 school year.

A block grant is made annually to the Secondary Education Committee for the purpose of assisting pupils to meet the cost of fees in Protestant schools. The amounts paid in respect of 1987, 1988 and 1989 were £2.098 million, £2.163 million and £2.215 million, respectively.

Grants were paid towards the running costs of other types of second level schools as follows:

Grants are also payable to secondary schools for other purposes, e.g., in respect of choirs and orchestras, psychological testing, teaching through Irish.

Community and comprehensive schools are not treated as separate entities for these purposes.

The costs given for vocational schools and community colleges include various activities, not all of which are second level and, therefore, the figures are not directly comparable.
