Vol. 394 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

51.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has any plans to carry out a survey of the coast from Baltray, County Louth to Castlebellingham, County Louth, in order to investigate the steps which should be taken to prevent further coastal erosion in that area.

Under the Coast Protection Act, 1963, the Commissioners of Public Works may undertake examinations of coast erosion problems and excute coast protection schemes in response to specific proposals made by local authorities, in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

The only proposal which has been made in respect of the area in question is for the Seabank, Castlebellingham. A preliminary examination has yet to be undertaken at this location and having regard to the large number of prior proposals received from other local authorities, I cannot say when it will be reached for examination.

I might also add that responsibility for coast protection will be transferred to the Minister for the Marine as and from 1 January 1990.
