Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - EC Education Credit Transfer System.

153.

asked the Minister for Education if the EC has launched its Community course credit transfer system; and if an equivalent system of interim monitoring of progress of undergraduates in Irish higher education institutions will be carried out in all cases in order that credits will be granted which will be transferable within the new EC system.

The European Community Course Credit Transfer System (ECTS) started in the present academic year. The ECTS is a pilot project within the Erasmus programme involving over 80 third-level institutions across the Community. The purposes of the project is to try to devise a system under which academic recognition can be granted more easily in respect of periods of study outside the home university. The five subject areas covered by the project are business studies, chemistry, history, mechanical engineering and medicine.

Five Irish higher education institutions are involved in the project which is to last for a six year period. The necessary monitoring of courses in the context of the ECTS will be carried out by the institutions involved.
