Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sex-Relationships Education.

166.

asked the Minister for Education if she has introduced a special course on the family in society in the curricula of all post-primary schools, as promised in the 1987 Fianna Fáil Election Manifesto, designed to ensure that young people grow up with a clear understanding of the nature of marriage; and the consultations she has had in regard to the course to date.

My Department issued guidelines to post-primary schools in 1987 on the development of sex/relationships education. These pointed out that the development of such programmes were matters for each individual school in support of the primary responsibility of parents. Inter alia the circular expressed confidence that schools would inculcate in students a commitment to the strengthening of marriage and the family in society.
