Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork Harbour Pollution.

40.

asked the Minister for the Environment the measures which are being taken by his Department to reduce the level of pollution in Cork harbour; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 106 of 26 October 1989 on a similar matter which gave details of a position report being prepared by the environmental research unit of my Department on the water quality in Cork harbour. Since then, I announced that a major study of the effluents and emissions from existing industrial developments in the Ringaskiddy area is to be undertaken by international consultants. These reports will serve as a basis for whatever action programmes may be needed to deal with any pollution problems in the harbour area. They will also provide a basis for the review by Cork County Council and the new Environmental Protection Agency of the standards and conditions imposed under the water and air pollution Acts in relation to the plant and facilities concerned.
