Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sheep Subsidy.

83.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has any proposals to increase the subsidy on sheep from the present amount; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Given that the 50 per cent of 1989 ewe premium to be paid in Ireland's disadvantaged areas has been fixed at £9.50, it would seem that the total 1989 ewe premium foreseen by the EC i.e. £19 will be £1.60 more than the 1988 ewe premium.

As for the sheep headage grants payable in our disadvantaged areas, the question of whether it will be possible to increase these and other rates can only be considered by me when the EC takes a decision on increasing Ireland's reimbursement rate under our disadvantaged areas schemes.
