Vol. 395 No. 1

Written Answers. - Abandoned Building Projects.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

92 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education if she will give a breakdown of the £6.4 million spent on abandoned projects in 1988; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The sum of £6.4 million includes the cost incurred up to 31/12/88 of suspended building projects, as well as those which have been abandoned. The total figure for abandoned projects amounts to only £420,423.

The breakdown is as follows:

161,291

Second level

259,132

Third level

From 1987 there was a change in the way the national schools building programme was being administered. Because of the changed financial environment and the large number of acute cases needing attention any case which proceeded did so on a modified basis. Substantial savings on the building programme were achieved as a result and the number of cases needing attention was reduced greatly.
