Vol. 395 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kilkee, Clare, Community School.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Ceist:

45 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Education the plans which are in place within her Department to provide for proper accommodation, equipment and facilities for Kilkee Community College, County Clare; and if her attention has been drawn to the disappointment that exists within the community in relation to the manner in which she has handled this situation to date.

In April, 1989, I decided to amalgamate the vocational school, Kilkee and the Convent of Mercy Secondary School, Kilkee.

Since that time my Department have been examining the most effective way in which this can be implemented. Technical officers from the building unit have visited the schools and have made detailed inspections of the premises and sites.

The secondary school authorities have also completed the necessary educational worksheets and have furnished such financial particulars as was sought.

At present my Department are evaluating the data and I expect to be in a position to take a decision shortly on the location of the amalgamated school and the schedule of accommodation for that school.

I can understand the anxiety of the local community in their desire to initiate the new school as quickly as possible and I can assure the Deputy that the matter is being dealt with as expeditiously as possible.
