Vol. 395 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

61 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the allegation by private bus operators involved in the school transport scheme that none of the additional £5 million allocated to Bus Éireann in the autumn of 1989 for the operation of the scheme was passed on to them.

The Deputy is understood to be referring to statements issued in the publicity material of the Private Association of Motor Bus Owners in relation to their application to Bus Éireann on behalf of their members for an increase in the mileage rates paid to them for their services. The position is that private bus operators in the school transport system are employed on an individual basis by Bus Éireann and any question of increase in rates is a matter for that company. The supplementary estimate of £5 million approved in 1989 was necessary to meet the overall expenditure of Bus Éireann in the operation of the school transport scheme.
