Ceist:

81 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of temporary whole time appointments made in each of the following sectors: (i) community schools (ii) comprehensive schools (iii) secondary schools and (iv) vocational schools during the years (a) 1987-1988 (b) 1988-1989 and (c) 1989-1990.

The increase from 106 temporary appointments in 1988-89 to 181 in 1989-90 on the vocational side can be attributed in some measure to temporary replacements for an increased number of teachers availing themselves of the career breaks scheme (208 in 1989-90 as against 163 in 1988-89) and to the increased numbers of students pursuing VPTP and the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme — areas in which permanent appointments are not allowed.
