Government policy for the development of Irish tourism as frequently articulated by me and my predecessor is to achieve a good quality and competitive product, marketed effectively and sold aggressively in international markets. All the Government initiatives on tourism over the past three years have been firmly based on this policy and will continue to be over the coming years.
The Bord Fáilte framework development plan Developing for Growth was drawn up within the policy framework I have outlined. It was primarily designed to show to the tourism industry where and how investment should be encouraged.
The operational programme for tourism prepared under the National Development Plan 1989-1993, and published by me on 4 January 1990, gives full details of how we intend to use EC Structural Funds for the development of Irish tourism for the period to 1993.
