Vol. 395 No. 2

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

61 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a section of the Rosslare/Dublin rail line is threatened by coastal erosion; and the plans, if any, he has, in conjunction with the Minister for the Marine, to protect this vital link.

I am informed by Iarnród Éireann that they have carried out some remedial works to protect the railway line and that they monitor weather and tidal conditions to ensure the safety of their operations. I understand that the coastal erosion, to which the Deputy refers, is taking place in an area which is not the responsibility of CIE and is about 75 metres from the railway and that the local authority have provided some protection there.

Responsibility for administering the Cost Protection Act, 1963 is a function of the Commissioners of Public Works.
