Vol. 395 No. 2

Written Answers. - Personal Injury Accidents.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

80 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he has any plans to abolish the current tort legal system and to introduce a new system to deal with personal injury accidents of any kind which would instead be heard by examining magistrates sitting with medical and actuarial advisers with the legal advisers present only to protect their client's legal rights.

For reasons which have been explained in this House on previous occasions, I could not undertake to indicate, by way of reply to parliamentary questions, what specific proposals I might have in regard to amending legislation in a particular area.

I might mention that reform of the law relating to compensation in personal injuries cases is among the matters being examined by the Law Reform Commission, at the request of the Attorney General. The commission's report, when published, will be considered in my Department in the normal way.
