Vol. 395 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conversion of Vehicles from Leaded Petrol Usage.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

22 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Defence whether all vehicles owned and/or run by both the State and by semi-State companies will be converted to the use of lead-free petrol; whether catalytic converters will be installed in all such vehicles; and if he will give a timescale for such works.

A programme for the conversion of appropriate Defence Forces vehicles from the use of leaded petrol to use of diesel fuel commenced during 1988: Defence Forces vehicles purchased since July 1988 have been diesel engined and it is intended that vehicles acquired in the future will also be diesel operated or will be capable of using lead-free petrol. The question of the installation of catalytic converters in vehicles is being examined.

There are no semi-State bodies under the aegis of my Department.

Has the Minister any plans to convert any of the vehicles to use liquid petroleum gas now that the duty has been reduced in the budget and since this fuel is a much more suitable form of fuel than lead-free petrol?

I will have that suggestion examined.
