Vol. 395 No. 3

Written Answers. - UNIFIL Troops.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

72 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether it is proposed to continue to send troops to UNIFIL; and whether the Government have proposed any change in the mandate of UNIFIL.

The Government intend to maintain Ireland's commitment to UNIFIL. The UN Security Council, acting at the request of the Government of Lebanon, unanimously adopted on 31 January 1990 a Resolution extending the mandate of UNIFIL for a further six months. All the countries which contribute troops to UNIFIL have indicated their willingness to continue their participation in the operation.

The Government have not proposed any change in UNIFIL's mandate. We continue to hold the view that all parties to the conflict should co-operate fully with UNIFIL to allow it to implement its mandate fully.
