Vol. 395 No. 3

Written Answers. - Headage Payments Recoupment.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

102 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total amount of moneys recouped from the EC in relation to headage payments in the severely handicapped areas for the years from 1985 to 1989 inclusive.

The amounts recouped from the EC in respect of headage payments on cattle in the years 1985 to 1989 in the less severely and more severely handicapped areas were as follows:

Year

Amount £

1985

14,080,336

1986

18,498,925

1987

29,333,311

1988

25,886,245

1989

21,287,760

The amounts recouped in respect of sheep headage payments in the years 1985 to 1989 in the less severely and more severely handicapped areas and the areas designated as disadvantaged for sheep headage purposes only were as follows:

Year

Amount £

1985

4,569,199

1986

5,375,978

1987

5,449,656

1988

5,799,616

1989

6,265,237

Separate figures are not available for recoupment of sheep headage in respect of the less severely, more severely handicapped and areas disadvantaged for sheep headage only.
Recoupment for each year was based on expenditure in previous calendar year.
In 1986 the EC gave special aid to enable Ireland increase headage payments for the purpose of alleviating difficulties caused to farmers by the poor weather in the autumn of 1986. The special aid was fully financed by the EC and is reflected in recoupments for 1987 and 1988, mainly.
