Vol. 395 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Uniforms.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

12 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Defence if there are any plans to update the uniform of the Irish Army in 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The various components of the dress of members of the Defence Forces are reviewed regularly and any modifications considered necessary to meet particular service requirements are carried out. No changes are contemplated at present.

Would the Minister indicate when the last review took place? Given the morale of the Defence Forces would he not agree that a change would be desirable?

I will have the matter looked into because it is worthy of examination. It has not been revised, as it were, since the early seventies.

That is the precise reason we tabled the question.

On balance, I will certainly have a look at it and communicate with the Deputy on the matter. It is certainly worthy of examination.

The Minister referred to regulations governing Army uniform. Might I invite him to circulate those regulations to the relevant spokespersons?

I will do that, certainly.
