Vol. 395 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disposal of Pig Slurry.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

114 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the progress, if any, which has been made in introducing an alternative method for the disposal of pig slurry by the construction of a digestor near Lough Sheelin, County Cavan; if it is in full operation; if it is being monitored; the results of monitoring to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following an initial assessment of the Lough Sheelin situation my office undertook to initiate a demonstration project.

Funding was provided in 1989 to construct pilot-scale anaerobic and aerobic digestors. The anaerobic digestor is now fully operational and its performance is being monitored. The pilot scale aerobic digestor is currently being installed.

Results to date are encouraging. Sufficient data should be available by the end of the year to determine how best to cope with the Lough Sheelin environmental problem.
