Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - German Reunification.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Ceist:

44 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has conveyed the Irish Government's position to his EC counterparts in relation to the possible unification of Germany; if he will publish any position paper available to him on the subject; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Michael Moynihan

Ceist:

62 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Irish Government have, within the framework of European political co-operation, formally put forward a view in relation to the attitude of the Irish Government towards the question of German reunification in the short term; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 62 together. The Government's policy on German unification has already been set out by the Taoiseach in reply to a question on 13 December last. As he remarked on that occasion the right to self-determination is a principle endorsed by the United Nations and Ireland supports the right of the peoples of the Federal Republic of Germany and of the German Democratic Republic to determine their own future by a free democratic process, in accordance with the position set out by the Twelve in the statement issued by the European Council in Strasbourg on 9 December.
