Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

108 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when reactor grants will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

Reactor grants due to the person named have been paid. The depopulation grants due will be paid as soon as possible.

Frank Crowley

Ceist:

109 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of farmers who applied for headage payments in 1989; the number two applied for the beef scheme and the calf scheme; the number of herds which have been and will be inspected; if there are herds which have been inspected; the reason these applications have not been processed and approved for payment; and if he intends to expedite those applications where no inspections are needed.

The number of applicants who applied under each headage scheme in 1989 was as follows:

Sheep and goat headage schemes in all disadvantaged areas

28,500

Cattle and equines headage scheme in more severely handicapped areas

64,700

Beef cow and equines headage scheme in less severely handicapped areas

13,500

Suckler cow premium scheme in all areas

71,600

Special beef premium scheme in all areas

74,600

Calf premium scheme in all areas

113,000

Ewe premium scheme in all areas

47,600

The inspections under all these schemes involved some 160,000 farm visits and have now been completed. About 20 per cent of the applicants under the cattle schemes are being cleared for payment without any on-farm visit as their applications were deemed to be in order.
The 1989 cattle headage inspections began and ended later than usual because of a High Court case last year which delayed the issue of application forms. All applications are being processed as quickly as possible.
