Vol. 395 No. 5

Order of Business (Resumed).

Has the Minister for the Environment received a request from Dublin Corporation to extend the application date for conversions in zones B and C in Ballyfermot? Will he agree to do this as today is the closing date?

That hardly arises now, Deputy.

It very much arises today.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the long delay in establishing post-primary facilities on Arranmore Island, County Donegal. Lack of these facilities necessitated the abandonment of the island by upwards of 100 pupils every week——

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning the matter.

Will the Taoiseach confirm that the Government have just approved an increase of 4 per cent in VHI fees from 1 April? If so, why was this deliberately concealed by the Minister for Health prior to last night's debate?

The Deputy should raise that in the proper manner.

I wish to raise it on the Adjournment.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the present confusion in the fish farm industry in view of the fact that the Minister for the Environment, the Minister for Energy and the Minister for the Marine have abdicated their responsibilities. I refer in particular to the threatened closure of the Salamara operations at Carrigadrohid and Parteen on spurious environmental grounds.

The Deputy need not elaborate now, I will be in touch with him.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the urgent need for the provision of adequate road access to and from Baldoyle Industrial Estate.

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning that matter.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the continuing uncertainty among the workers in the Great Southern Hotel Group and the future of the company.

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning the matter.

I wish to raise a matter which Deputy Mac Giolla has already raised. I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of the closing date for grants under the Air Pollution Act for smoke control zones B and C in Ballyfermot. The issue must be resolved today.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

Having regard to the great uncertainty, inconvenience and anxiety to Department of Education staff and their families, I wish to raise on the Adjournment the failure of the Minister to complete arrangements for decentralisation to Athlone as promised in November 1987.

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning that matter.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the failure of the Government to make a decision on the downstream crossing of the River Lee.

I will be in touch with the Deputy.

For the third time I should like to raise on the Adjournment the situation resulting from the decision of the Minister for the Environment not to ratify further smoke control orders, with particular reference to grant assistance for people wishing to convert to smokeless fuels and appliances.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise for the sixth time — which is probably a record — the problems of accommodation in Fingal community college.

I need hardly remind the House that the Chair can only choose two items on the Adjournment and the more demands made on me, the more difficult it is. However, I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of large areas of Connemara being designated as ones of scientific interest without consultation with the land owners concerned and the serious effect it is having as those people are then disqualified from all State grants.

I will communicate with the Deputy. I observe that Deputy Creed is again offering.

In regard to the question I seek to raise on the Adjournment, which Minister is accepting responsibility for the matter?

We will decide that later.
