Vol. 395 No. 5

Written Answers. - Representations on Court Fines.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

64 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the number of representations he has received since taking office requesting him to intervene or alter court fines or sentences; the percentage of representations which were from (a) politicians and (b) citizens; and the number of cases he amended.

Up to the end of January 1990, I received approximately 1,900 petitions to remit or commute penalties under the Criminal Justice Act, 1951, and during that period 3,330 petitions were dealt with — these included cases on hands when I took up office. Remission, partial mitigation or extension of time to pay was granted in 1,599 of the cases dealt with.

Statistics relating to petitions are not maintained in a way that enables a break-down to be given between those received from public representatives and from the public generally.
