Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rules for Secondary Schools.

John Bruton

Ceist:

205 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of each case in the last ten years in which her Department decided that a school was unsuitable on the grounds of accommodation, equipment, lighting, heating or sanitation under section II (2) of the Rules for Secondary Schools.

John Bruton

Ceist:

207 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if there has been any case in which she or a predecessor has used the powers she has under section II (10) of the Rules for Secondary Schools.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 205 and 207 together.

On occasions when it appeared that a school might be unsuitable as described in section II (2) the matter was taken up with the school authorities and generally my Department's recommendations are complied with.

I am aware of only one occasion when it was necessary to withdraw recognition from a school under section II (10) because of a decline in pupil numbers.

Ceist:

206 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of each case in the last 20 years in which she used the powers in section II (8) of the Rules for Secondary Schools to require examinations or other tests to be held.

I am not aware of any occasion in the past 20 years on which these powers were used.
