53 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Finance the number of returns for self-assessment which are outstanding for the income tax year (a) 1988-89 and (b) 1990-91.
Returns in respect of the income tax year ending 5 April 1991 are not due until 31 December 1990. Accordingly the information requested by the Deputy in relation to the tax year 1990-91 is not available. The following is the position in relation to the tax years 1988-89 and 1989-90:

54 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Finance the number of audits which were carried out under the new self-assessment regime since it commenced.
The first audits of income tax returns submitted under the self-assessment system took place in November 1989. Since that date a total of 85 audits have been carried out. A further 40 are in progress on a countrywide basis at present.
