Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Decentralisation of Government Department.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

104 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the decentralisation of a Government Department to Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government, by a decision of 27 March 1987, relaunched the programme to decentralise the Civil Service. The programme adheres to those centres, including Waterford, that were originally chosen for decentralised offices in October 1980.

Under the original 1980 programme, sections from the former Department of Posts and Telegraphs had been designated for decentralising to Waterford. The establishment since then of two State-sponsored bodies, An Post and Telecom Éireann, whose activities previously had formed part of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, has necessitated a reassessment of the situation.

This matter is being actively pursued at present. A suitable site for the decentralised offices in Waterford is available.
