Vol. 396 No. 2

Written Answers. - Conductive Education.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

139 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if she will make funds available to have a teacher of conductive education available in the Cork area.

I take it the Deputy is referring to the conductive education system which is being pioneered by the PETO Institute in Budapest. The conductor in this system is not merely a teacher but a person who on his/her own employs the various skills of teachers, nurses, physiotherapists, etc., in developing the potential of the child to become mobile.

I understand that a number of children are being taught at the Cork Spastic School using conductive methods but with parents, physiotherapists and other professionals involved under the guidance of a teacher who has had some training in the conductive methods.

On Wednesday 21 February 1990 I met a delegation of Cork Deputies to discuss this matter in detail. I will now be taking the matter up within my Department and will ask my officials to report back to me as soon as possible.
